For the past week I have longingly looked on as what appears to be a Bavarian-organized hoonathon(tm) party takes place in Alameda. The small island nation of Alameda, Calif., was once a US military installation, and features ample retired tarmac. I snapped the pictures below from the vantage point of the SF Ferry, the only true way gentlemen commute anymore.
Team Munich appears to have brought about two dozen cars for a week of autocross happiness. The assortment appears to have included many 2s, some bigger 5/7s, and the wee i car. Given the size of this activation, and the fact that the visitor lot was full of Bimmers from all walks of life, I suspect this was a customer event, and not just something for the press.
While my water-borne perch did not allow me to hear the action, there were many disturbingly sudden changes in both direction and speed visible from the cars on the courses. Some of the driving sequences were appointed with small poofs of tire smoke, a lovely sight to be sure.
If you live in the Bay Area and your dealer did NOT call to invite you, you are likely not considered a top-tier customer. Consider 1. changing dealers, 2. buying an M-something this weekend, 3. just having a sad to yourself and go hug someone.

No code or purchase necessary. Good luck finding an open spot by now though.

FYI: Anything Alameda-related always reminds of this scene from Star Trek. Love thick Russian-accented Chekov asking the Cold War era cop about where to find the 'nuclear wessels' (@1:14 in clip below).
